String Quartet No. 4 in G Major

Here is my fourth string quartet.

This has been a long time in the 'Getting Around To It' as I've been working on another composition (which will eventually be completed but is much bigger than this one).  The ideas for this work took shape along the way and were temporarily shelved for a later date.

Anyway, by way of taking a break, I decided to finish off this work, and here it is!

Symphony No. 1 in C Major

Well, now!  I've written a symphony!

This work has been a long time in the making and the struggle has been both challenging and rewarding.  The whole thing is about 25 and a half minutes long.  I hope you enjoy it!

(Updated 03/10/2024: This work has been renamed as Symphony No.1 because my second symphony has been published.)

Dressage

Another short piano piece.  Makes me think of dancing horses.

Suite for Cello and Piano

Having long been a fan of that most evocative of instruments, the cello, I thought I would write a sonata for it.  I ended up having so many ideas that the only thing to do was to write a whole suite instead!

There are eight movements, varying in mood and intensity.  The suite begins light, ends with energy, and has darkness in the middle.

I tried hard to make the piano part more than accompaniment, so the tunes switch at times between the two instruments, and sometimes the piano is the major force.

I'm quite pleased with the finished result.  I hope you like it too.

String Quartet No. 2 in C Major

I'm quite pleased with this one; it's a big improvement on my first effort.

As with all the music on this site, it's best played through a decent sound system or headphones.  I find the speakers on my laptop lose the bass and distort the balance somewhat.

Waltzes for Strings

This work has morphed from a single piece to a suite of five.  The first I wrote a while ago.  It was intended to be part of a serenade for strings but other projects intervened. Eventually I had some other ideas.  Enjoy!

Waltz 1
Waltz 2: Whirligig
Waltz 3; Raindrops
Waltz 4: Sweet Sorrow
Waltz 5: Carousel

Unexpected Inspiration - Machinations, Op. 3.

Musical composition seems to be my bag at the moment.  Last Friday (17 March) we went to a concert of Beethoven, Haydn and Prokofiev music.  Fantastic! (Well, the Haydn was drab by comparison with the rest.)

The big surprise was the Prokofiev — absolutely marvelous.  This is not the sort of music I would rush out to buy but it was a thrilling ride.  The orchestra obviously had fun playing it and it was fascinating to see the frantic activity and the almost mechanical movements of the players.  It was a piece full of surprise and humour.

Well, I was inspired!  Hence, the new creation below.  I've called it Machinations for reasons that will be obvious when you hear it. I wonder what images it puts in your mind...

String Quartet No. 1 in A Major, Op. 1.

I've had a go at writing some music.  Here's my first string quartet.  (Actually, in the light of experience gained in writing other music, I revised it and republished on 25 June 2019 and then again on 12 February 2024.)

Hope you enjoy it!
